James se formó en el Drama Centre London y posteriormente desarrolló una carrera actoral que incluyó varias producciones de larga duración en el West End.

En 1998, fue invitado a regresar al Drama Centre para colaborar con el Dr. Yat Malmgren en la enseñanza de Psicología del Movimiento (inspirada en el trabajo pionero de Rudolf Laban). Tras la jubilación del Dr. Malmgren en 2001, James heredó su trabajo y lo desarrolló aún más a través de talleres en: Stage Centre (Israel), International Workshop Festival, Caravanserai Acting Studio, Beit Zvi School of Performing Arts, Beit Lessin Theatre (Tel Aviv), Schott Acting Studio (Berlín), Actors Center (Nueva York), Theatro Del Mundo/Centro Cultural Helénico (Ciudad de México), y como “consultor Laban” en la producción de The Maids de Katie Mitchell en el Young Vic. También ha enseñado en LAMDA.

Entre sus alumnos más destacados se encuentran: Michael Fassbender, Tom Hardy, Rebecca Ferguson, Emilia Clarke, Santiago Cabrera, Stephen Wight, Gemma Chan, Gwendoline Christie, Damien Molony, Tamla Kari, Jodie McNee, Lucy Briggs-Owen, Bradley James, Ruta Gedmintas, Rolan Bell, John Dagleish, Howard Charles, Ryan Gage, Lily Cole, Daniel Francis, entre otros.
